How’s your documentation on your business systems?

Your SOP starts with a CHECKLIST.

It ends with the HOW TO for each item on the CHECKLIST.

But easy does it on the explanation in the HOW TO section.

You are a coach.  The leader.  The visionary.

You have hired a team member to be the do’er.  And you’ve hired well, and you’ve hired a professional who is quite competent to handle the tasks.

You don’t need to go overboard on the HOW TO section. Over explanations cause more confusion and waste more time than is necessary.

Document the steps, document the screenshots, and leave the room for your competent professional – the do’er – to fill in the obvious.

What’s obvious and what’s not?

Example of Obvious: You certainly don’t need to screenshot the login procedures for a typical application.

Example of Obvious: A step that tells them to “repeat steps 3-9 and then proceed to step 11” is better than documenting steps 3-9 multiple times in the manual.

Keep it simple.  Keep it clear.  Keep it precise.  Your do’er is intelligent, they’ll get it.  And they want to get it as quickly as they can, because they’re a do’er and do’ers like to move onto the next best thing to be doing.

Whoa!  I think I overdid the do’er there?  That’s okay.  It was fun.

Now….think simple and save loads of time on the front end for designing that SOP.
